SUMMARY OF THE BOOK (200-300 WORDS)

A fascinating read, the book examines the pedagogic practices of the Krishna murti schools in India. It is divided into sections and looks into how the everyday routine and practices of the school reflect on each theme discussed. The anecdotes recounted by the author and his own reflections and insights of them make the book quite thought-provoking, forcing the reader to pause and introspect on what our definition of learning is and what perhaps a good education should entail.

I particularly enjoyed reading the section on examining fear. The author looks at the links between fear and agency and, more significantly, discusses what the absence or at least an understanding of fear in learning spaces could mean - [that] the child [finds] reservoirs of strength, interest, and purpose from within. Having experienced direct fear of physical harm in the learning space, it was almost cathartic to read what an education that strives to disallow fear could involve.

The book, for me, mirrored the love and care I witnessed in high school and brought forth a serious engagement with the attempt at understanding education and, in many ways, our own selves.

RECOMMENDATION OF BOOK (30-50 WORDS)

A great book! In general, what I liked about the book is the appropriate choice and usage of words by Ashwin. The book has a great flow from one chapter to another (which have been thoughtfully chosen) and has the right amount of contents. The chapters are wonderfully backed up by some equally beautiful photos taken by students.

PURPOSE OF BOOK REVIEW (30-50)

The basic purpose of a book review, as I see it, is to help readers decide whether to read the book themselves. A book review should identify the central idea of the book, give the reader some indication of the author's style, approach, or premises, and then offer an overall evaluation.
